US WWII (Ames 1944) Folding Shovel - tam Shovel, Folding, 1944, Ames, WWII,
I've never thought that my WWII folding shovel will see much real use, besides being lugged in a car trunk and occasionally shown to my friends. I've bought it from an Army surplus depot for a very modest price (around 1.5 EUR). It was manufactured by Ames in 1944 and today it's a very common version, so I've decided to leave its historic value behind and put it to new civilan use. I've removed the old OD paint, done some rustproofing with Oikos water-based rust converter, resprayed the blade matt black and soaked the wooden handle with fast drying linseed oil several times (using a propane burner to accelerate the process).

This winter has been unusually cold and snowy and I've used my folding shovel to remove snow and ice around a car (which was parked in an open parking lot, unfortunately). That was sometimes very hard and time-consuming work, but this sturdy tool never complained (I did, LOL) and it carried on with its duty like a true GI grunt. This is obviously not something you'd EDC on your person, but I'd...

Bahco Laplander 396 folding saw - tam folding, Laplander, Bahco,
This saw is part of my bushcraft kit (besides Fallkniven F1 or Mora 860MG/Bahco 2444 knives + firesteel), so it' s a sort of a woodland EDC:

I like it because it's relatively small and lightweight, makes excellent bi-directional cut in both soft and hard wood, and its rubbery surface simply sticks to the hand. Typical example of Scandinavian design: function, visual appeal and quality - all in one. They're also available in orange/black and without anti-friction coating (that's a cheaper version but functionality is retained, I also have one of those).

Highly recommended item for all you woodsmen who pack lite and thus don't carry an axe.

Cheers,

Tam
