I never even knew what a fire piston was. There is nobody on this forum and I already learned something.

Hehehe they are quite good, but you need a special tinder (for example char cloth) to make them work, otherwise it's too difficult to make fire Sad

Uses the same principle of compression ignition as Diesel engine does.

Only charcloth takes a bit more effort to ignite than vaporised liquid fuel Icon_cheesygrin

(So I choose firesteel or ordinary butane lighter)

By the way, I tried firepiston with 96º alcohol but it didn't work. I also tried cotton (not cooked, I mean not char cloth but normal one that is used for wounds) and it didn't work either. I wonder why? Surprised

Damn, where did my first reply go...? Huh

Anyway, I did some googling and found this site. Read the red print...

Maybe there wasn't enough air to start the combustion, or you were just plain lucky...Smiley_nono Smiley_fire

Do you mean you had a problem with your reply? Please let me know, I will try to fix it if there is any failure in the forum.

Thanks for the alert! I thought it could be dangerous for a moment but I finally thought it wasn't because it didn't even work. My fault Sad Don't try that in your home! Big Grin hehehe. What do you think it could happen? explosion? Surprised Wow if so I was really lucky.

I've sent the reply and it never appeared. I had 10 or so windows opened in an old Firefox and a heavy traffic aside, though. Or it was a stupid connection lapse (typical for my ISP)...

I Google everything potentially dangerous before I try it myself. Results are loads of BS generally, but an occasional reasonable advice or a caution can be VERY useful. Yes, there could have been an explosion (volatile fuel+air+source of heat+confined space=....)

Cheers,

Tam

Thank you very much Smile Sometimes I am quite irresponsible and I almost always end injured one way or another Big Grin

I still have to make char cloth by myself but I have read it produces too much smoke so I can't do it here since I am in a flat and neighbours would call firemen Sad

I think I made mine on a terrace, and I live in a flat, too. Surprisingly it didn't smoke much and there were no emergency services involved Big Grin

I pierced the top of a Nivea hand creme tin, put the roll of cotton wick inside, closed it and heated over a butane burner.

I haven't tested the charcloth yet... Maybe I did it all wrong? Confused

Cheers,

Tam

Hehehe thanks for the information. I don't think you did it wrong, anyway I imagine you can test it just with a flame and blowing.
