Which type of lube do you use for folding knives and multitools?

Over the years I've chosen a couple of fine brands (Ballistol, CLP) and I stick to them, but I have still lot to learn...

Cheers,

Tam

Depending which knife I can use a cheap oil I bought in a supermarket, "6 en 1" lube or even NyoGel (I use it for my most beloved flashlights) but I don't use any special for knives although I am planning to buy one day Smile As far as I understand, the three options I use are not very good for them, but I am not sure. They seem to work fine Smile

By the way, "6 en 1" is famous in Spain (as well as "3 en 1"), I don't know if there is a version of the same one in other countries: http://www.ferreteriarafecas.com/lubrica...16555.html

I've been edc-ing a knife for about three years now, and the first time I have ever lubed my knives was in the last 24 hours. I used baby oil. It seemed to do the trick for the two knives that needed to be lubed. Mineral oil might be better, but I didn't have any on me. On the positive side, my previously-stuck knives are unstuck, and they smell great! Big Grin I got the idea from a BLF member, jekostas. Here's the link to his advice he gave me in April 2011: budgetlightforum.com/node/1928#comment-30098

Generic baby oil is mineral, although some new formulas are based on vegetable oils. The smell is a plus Wink

I like Super Lube with Teflon, they make it in grease and oil. The funny thing is, any lube is better than no lube at all.

If you heat up the knife before oiling the oil will penetrate the steel. After the knife cools the oil will be locked into the steel.

Hi Dusterdude, and welcome to EDCM.

Never tried it, but be careful not to inadvertently anneal the blade and ruin the factory heat treatment (it's possible even at 150 degs Celsius on some steels). AFAIK what you say is possible only if there's already a porous surface coating (certainly not the case if blade is polished).

Cheers,

Tam

I unfold the knife and spray the joints with WD40. Then I move the moving parts a few times around to spread the lubricant. It works great!

Has anyone seen a can of WD40 with teflon? I would buy that for sure!
