Using a Lansky kit that allows different angles. Anyone use or compare to CRKT or Spyderco kits? Others?

I'm sharpening freehand, with stones and carbide sandpaper. With a little practice it's fairly easy to maintain proper sharpening angles (few degrees more or less, that is).

Cheers,

With the Lansky, it took me a while to get used to the sharpening method, to avoid marking the blade and get a strait edge. I think I have gotten the hang of it but I had to re-do the first couple of blades. My kit uses ceramic stones, and I found these take awhile to re-profile the blade. I have start at the course stone to do this. Once I get through all the stones the blade has a great edge. I do not think I could get a consistent angle free hand, maybe too much coffee. Be happy I am only cutting string, cardboard, packaging etc. and am not a doctor! Though the Lansky has a angle for a scalpel edge.

I found its much easier to get a quick edge with a simple diamond stick. You see these everywhere for about $8. Looks like a pen, with a round diamond coated steel, one side with a flat edge and a hook sharpener groove. A couple of light pulls and the blade has a real edge. Makes me wonder if a sharpening kit with diamond stones would be better. It also has one side that goes to a needle point, which helps get to the serrations.
