Solarforce L2 bezel ring mod - practical, not tactical

My Solarforce L2 was shipped with a crenellated (tactical, strike) bezel ring, which I didn't like right out the packaging. It's aggressive on hands, pockets and furniture, it makes the flashlight 7-8 mm longer than absolutely necessary - in other words it's awkward and clumsy.

So out came the Dremel tool with coarse sanding drum, and later a sheet of 100 grit sandpaper. Crenellations and ring were sanded away right down to the ledge! The remaining threaded ring was then inserted backwards (sanded face down). This is how my L2 looks now:

There is a chance that this mod allowed for a few lumens higher output, beam spill seems a bit wider and there is an aesthetic improvement (IMHO). Ring is still removable and replaceable without a tool (friction is your friend, heh).

However, bezel is now a bit more vulnerable to damage in case of drop, but I'm taking a good care of my flashlights so this is a minor trade-off.

EDIT 1 (17-03-2012): Diffuser added. Frosted translucent film by D-C-Fix (adhesive removed with acetone!). Retaining ring from a sports drink PET bottle. Result: tight useful hotspot, but more diffuse with plenty of spill.

Tam

Very interesting! This way you won't be injured if you fall while you are holding it.
