Do you have one of these cable rings? Very practical for keys and various EDC stuff:

I've bought mine locally in a travel accessory shop, it was actually a part of stylish suitcase name tag. It is now protected from chafing with a piece of clear shrink tubing, and serves me well for almost 4 years now.

Also available online (advertised as "aircraft mechanic rings").

Cheers,

Tam

Thanks for the info! Big Grin

I have seen many people wear them and I wanted mine time ago, I sill want it, but I always end spending money in other things Sad

How much did it cost yours? Is it tight enough to support many heavy keychains that weight quite a lot? How tight is it?

I've paid around 4.5 Euros for it, so it was rather expensive considering the price online. It came with fancy aluminum tags and stickers for name/address/phone no. (I threw those away immediately) Icon_mrgreen

I think it's strong, since I couldn't pull it apart with my hands. Collar and terminals are made from plated brass and threads work fine (waxed them to last longer). Tiny wires which are braided into the cable are really thin and IMO prone to chafing, so I've used thermal shrink tube to protect them. Works great.

Max. weight I've carried on that ring was Fenix E01 + Victorinox MiniChamp (my keys hang on split rings and a carabiner).

Cheers,

Tam

I thought it was made out of steel. Is brass version as strong as stainless steel one?

Please, if you want it would be very nice to see pics of your keychains and other EDC posted here: http://edcmania.com/forum/Forum-Your-Everyday-Carry-EDC

Tiny misunderstanding.

Wire itself is steel (not stainless but chrome or nickel plated, as far I can tell).

Cable terminals (endings) and threaded collar (knurled tubular part) are brass.

Ohh I am sorry, thank you very much for your clarification Smile

Why would they use brass for that parts instead of using steel? Surprised

Easier machining, lower friction, corrosion resistance, aesthetics... I quite like brass Whistle

Woww I didn't know that, thanks! Smile

By the way the little round piece with a hole which is inside of some knives, is it made of brass or is that copper? I didn't open the ones which have it but I can see them if I look carefully. The ones I opened were just plastic or stainless but I can see others, without opening them, with a piece of copper colour.

Brass is generally yellowish in appearance, and shines like gold when freshly polished. As far as I know, "old school" folding knives used to have brass pivot pins because they were supposed to snap first (instead of the blade!) if you use excessive force on a knife. Also there is a reduced friction if steel and brass/bronze are combined.

On newer knives there are various pivot designs (hollow, adjustable, with composite materials, ball bearings, etc), but I'm not an expert on that.

Cheers,

Tam
